The value of
prayer
Clarissa Berglund

There were five or six buses that
went to World Vision for Tourformation on Monday and my
youth group teamed up with a group from Texas. When we
got there each group was assigned a different job. The
group I was with was asked to go on a prayer walk around
the neighborhood. We were to pass our flyers about World
Vision and tracts. We were to ask people if they had a
prayer request and to pray over each house.
The lady leading our group told us
that a lot of people might not come to the door because
there are a lot of Jehovah Witnesses in the area who
always go door-to-door and people were tired of it. She
was right. Most people either weren’t home or chose not
toe answer the door. We did get to talk to and pray for
a few people but not many.
Towards the end of our walk there
was a guy outside doing some construction work on his
house. We talked to him and told him about World Vision.
He was polite but it seemed like he kind of just wanted
us to leave. One of the leaders in our group asked if he
needed payer about anything and he immediately opened up
to us.
He told us that he had moved to
California from Alaska and that he was really
struggling. He was having some personal struggles that
were really overwhelming him. He said is a Christian and
shared with us a little bit of his testimony. When he
was done sharing, the whole group joined hands and had a
time of prayer. It’s amazing that God put us there right
when that guy needed us. It was an encouragement to him
and it was a huge encouragement to us.
I was completely out of my comfort
zone and even scared all through our prayer walk.
Something about going up to total strangers to talk just
scares me. I know I wasn’t trusting God through the
whole thing, and I prayed hard about that.
Being on a prayer walk also made
me realize something else. While I may not have the gift
of evangelism or something similar, God always lays it
on my heart to pray hard. I prayed for the group as they
went up to each door. I prayed for the people in the
house and whenever I get done with something like this,
God always lays it on my heart to pray for the specific
people we met.
So maybe that’s my part of this
whole thing. Prayer is so important and I think too
often we underestimate the power of prayer. So I kept
praying and I will keep praying, trusting that God will
honor those prayers.
