The City: Omaha

Founded in 1854, Omaha was named after an American Indian tribe. Omaha means “Those going against the wind or current.” The Omaha metropolitan area is home to over 850,000 people, making it the 42nd largest city in the United States. Omaha is known for its extensive medical training facilities and hospitals and is the home of Omaha Steaks and billionaire Warren Buffett.

The greater Omaha area is home to five Mennonite Brethren congregations: Faith Bible Church, Iglesia Agua Viva, Shadow Lake Community Church in Papillion, Manatial De Agua Viva and Stony Brook Church. Read more about these congregations. 

Attractions, Activities and Shopping

  • One of Omaha's top attractions is Henry Doorly Zoo,a world famous zoo named Best Zoo in America in 2004. It features the world’s largest indoor tropical rainforest, the Scott Aquarium, the world’s largest geodesic enclosed arid desert and an IMAX theater. 
  • Omaha Children’s Museum features outstanding interactive hands-on displays and activities, a Creativity Center and a Science and Technology Center.
  • The Durham Western Heritage Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, is located in the Art Deco-style Union Station. Exhibits highlight the railroad history of the region plus many other interesting collections.
  • Boys Town, Father Flanagan’s home for boys, is located in west Omaha and is a national historic landmark. Tours are available (fee required) or you can visit the Hall of History, Visitors Center and tour on your own (no fee). Visitors to Boys Town can also visit the Garden of the Bible (150+ plants and species all found in the Bible) and see the world’s largest ball of stamps.
  • The River City Star riverboat offers public excursions on the Missouri River.
  • The Old Market (right) is a historic downtown neighborhood featuring over 80 unique shops, boutiques, restaurants, bookstores, bakeries, art galleries, clothing stores and more. Fun anytime of the day or evening. (Our hotel is located across the street from this area.)
  • The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is the longest pedestrian bridge to link two states, providing safe crossing form Omaha to Council Bluffs, Iowa over the Missouri River. Whether walking or biking, this bridge connects 150 miles of trails on each side. Lights outline the deck, cables and pylons at night creating a spectacular sight. On the Omaha side, enjoy the 3-acres Omaha Plaza with an interactive water jet fountain, Fiber Wave Sculpture, River Critters Environmental Play Area and the National Park Service Visitors Center.
  • The Strategic Air and Space Museum is one of the nation’s best. This $30 million museum has two aircraft display hangars, a children’s interactive gallery and an aircraft restoration gallery and features great aircraft and missile displays.
  • Fun Plex is Nebraska’s largest water and ridepark featuring a 70 ft high roller coaster, five-story waterslides, Motion Ocean, Lazy River, Go-karts, Ferris Wheel, Tilt-A-Whirl, Chaos ride, Carousel, Bumper Boats, Miniature Golf and Kiddie Land with rides for small children.
  • CoCo Key Water Park is a huge indoor water resort adventure featuring three 40-foot body and raft slides, Adventure River and more.

The original Nebraska Furniture Mart, 700 S. 72nd, is America’s largest home furnishings store with over 450,000 sq. ft. of home flooring, furniture, appliances and electronics. 

Westroads Mall, 10000 California St., has over 135 specialty stores including Forever 21 and Gap and department stores such as Von Maur, Younkers and JCPenney. Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs and other restaurants plus a movie theater. 

Village Pointe Shopping Center offers upscale, distinctive shopping, dining and entertainment in west Omaha, at 168th St. and West Dodge Road. 

Oak View Mall, 144th and Center Streets, has over 100 great stores, plus four major department stores: Dillard’s, JCPenney, Sears and Younkers. 

Borsheim’s Fine Jewelry and Gifts, 120 Regency Pkwy, is America’s largest independent jewelry store and is owned by Warren Buffet.
