SMCC @ The Springs

Another South Mountain Community Church (SMCC) ministry, SMCC @ The Springs, with lead pastor, Tom Mertz, is an "adopted" church now in the SMCC family (Draper, Utah—Pastor Paul Robie). Mission USA is providing subsidy for staff (Associate Pastor Phil Wiebe - left).

A few years ago, South Mountain Community Church pastor, Paul Robie, and The Springs pastor, Tom Mertz began talking at a seminar and got to know one another. Mertz related to Robie about the rough start his new church had experienced in the early years of its existence.  As they talked more, the idea emerged about what could happen if SMCC "adopted" this struggling church into the South Mountain family.  This adoption took place, and with subsidy from SMCC, the Pacific District Conference and Mission USA, the church added some much needed staff and began a season of healing.

Three years ago, attendance was a lethargic 90.  Currently, the church has truly taken off, with Sunday attendance in the 350s.  This past summer they often had 370 in worship services.  Many people have been baptized recently!  The church is reaching many disenfranchised Mormons and others from different life backgrounds.

Pastor Tom (pictured left) writes about things to pray for:

  • Families struggling due to the bad economy

    • Mormons who are counting the cost of becoming a Christian [we have many Mormons in our services]

    • The 'spiritual development process' that we are constructing.
